Summer 2006: Dean Winchester has all but given up. Yes, he’s finally dating the girl of his dreams, but nothing else seems to go right. His grades are slipping, his job keeps him away from his friends, and the deal he’s got going with Alastair is only getting harder to fulfill. At least Dean’s best friend from last summer, Castiel Milton, is back in town… but so are all the confusing feelings that come with him.

Sequel to You and I (Collide) (submitted rec). Can be read on its own.

Dean is the starting setter for his college’s volleyball team. His plans for the year include winning Conferences, passing his classes, kicking Benny’s butt at basketball, and making sure Ash remembers to eat and bathe on a semi-regular basis. He doesn’t plan on meeting Cas Milton but once he does, Dean’s carefully planned year changes.

    Dark Side of the Moon

Dark Side of the Moon by imogenbynight [author spotlight]

    Word Count: 37,200
Summary: Five months into his six month mission, an accident leaves Flight Engineer Dean Winchester stranded on the moon. It comes down to a man he has never met to bring him home.

Honestly, this year’s dcbb have the most diverse AU stories; the imagination of the fandom authors is really amazing! ;) This engaging, well written, and thoroughly researched story has everything you would expect from a fic about space exploration – claustrophobic and atmospheric scenes, acute loneliness of main characters, some eerie horror elements but, most importantly, plenty of canon references that fit perfectly to these extraordinary circumstances. I mean, Cas’ mission to save Dean is just as epic on the Moon as it is on the show. I liked that the author spent some time on separate yet parallel stories for Dean and Cas, with only Charlie as a connecting link between them. We get to learn more about both guys before their fated meeting and then we get to witness the pining and relationship misunderstandings on the scale that only these two are capable of. It seems that some things never change, no matter the kind of circumstances Dean and Cas meet each other.

    What Once was Sacred

What Once Was Sacred by saltandbyrne
    AO3 link
    Rating: NC-17
    Word Count: 55,800
Summary: Los Angeles detective Dean Winchester works tirelessly to atone for the sins of his father one case at a time. When his best friend Charlie drags him to visit Sam at his new job, Dean stumbles onto a bizarre string of deaths that brings him uncomfortably close to his past. Dean can’t stop thinking about Castiel, an enigmatic DJ who plays the sexiest music Dean’s ever heard. A chance encounter at Castiel’s house reveals that Castiel is an incubus, and Dean must face the lies and the reality of his childhood as a hunter. Dean comes to see that he and Castiel have more in common than he thought, and that guilt can be the hardest thing to cast aside.

Well, hello cop!au fic with a supernatural twist, edgy clubbing scene, and merry bunch of spn side characters who are all alive and kicking. I never knew that I wanted to ship Garth with Ash or Charlie with Anna but now I do. ;) And any detective Dean W. fic with Victor H. as his friend and partner is a good fic in my books. Add to the mix pole dancer Kevin, Michael with an eye patch, saucy Meg, awesome Jess, sulky Krissy… well, you get what I’m saying - lots of spn side characters have colorful cameos here and it is a very enjoyable read indeed.

The story is set in the same universe as the show and I absolutely loved the two versions of Dean’s early life story: first with supernatural in it and the second one where anything unnatural is rationalized away. Another big part of the story belongs to the music – night club scenes with sexy DJs, Cas making remixes and podcasts, Dean enjoying Cas’ music in his alone time, ahem. Music and the supernatural come together in a very sensual way and lead directly to very well written smut, which is not surprising given the author. Really, there’s no reason not to read this fic!

    C-S-T-L by komodobits
    AO3 link
    Rating: M
    Word Count: 90,400
Summary: It’s been nineteen years since the beginning of the Last War, and the Alliance Army is losing land faster than it can supply good men to defend it. Their hope is the synthesis of Android Angeles, a series of humanoid machines designed without the capacity to feel, and thus enabling them to be the perfect super soldiers. In order to check their battle suitability, the first prototypes are sent down with a landing party of the men they will later replace, and Sergeant Dean Winchester is paired with Unit 5284-C-S-T-L for the assignment. Cas, as Dean nicknames him, is easy enough to work with - once you get past the emotional vacancy and blatant disregard for human life, that is - but as the squad’s tour goes on, Dean gets to wondering whether the Android Angeles are really as unfeeling as he’s been told, or if the fear of a reality in which malfunctioning prototypes will be shut down is too great for them to exist any other way.

This was a fantastic read. I loved seeing all the canon inspired elements and the characterizations were wonderful. The author uses a wealth of characters (new and old) and the universe is beautifully populated (it’s a war fic and there’s a lot of interactions between squad members). I’m not typically a fan of the war genre in any medium and felt the pacing was a bit slow in certain places, but really enjoyed the sense of comradery. Though some characters obviously got more attention than others, all were distinct and well written. I just get the feeling that the author has a real love for spn’s side characters.

It’s pretty fucking angsty, but the payoff is well worth it. I get emotional about Cas and his love for humanity (in canon and in fanfic), and the author did an excellent job highlighting that aspect of his personality. The fic is very similar to a falling!cas work. So, if you are interested in seeing that in an AU setting, definitely check this story out. There’s also a warmth and humorous side to the fic. Cheeky!Dean is always going to be a soft spot for me and this fic delivers. And oh, man…Dean getting jealous of Sam and Cas’ friendship and changing up formation to literally get in the middle of their conversations. Lmao.

Seriously, I’m really not doing this fic justice. It’s lovely. I was actually nervous that I would ruin the fic for myself since the summary has had me excited for weeks (self-overhyping? is that a thing?). But that thankfully wasn’t the case.

"Hey, I was wondering if you know of any good fics with Victor Henriksen as an awesome side character? (kinda like he is in Convenient Husbands)"

    asker: Anonymous

Yes, in Below Skyscrapers Victor is Dean’s friend and fellow detective. Also give The Way the War was Won and Highwaymen. a try.

And you may like these short fics with awesome Victor by scaramouche, the author of Convenient Husbands:

    A Clever Suggestion [T, 2,168 word count]

Castiel and Victor share a gym, and Castiel is surprised when Victor tries to set him up.

Five Times Dean failed, and One Time He didn’t Do Too Badly [M, 5,509 word count]

University AU. Dean isn’t as cool as he thinks he is.

Or you can browse Victor Henriksen tag on ao3 and see what kind of fics you like. :)

"do you have anything similar to when Charlie met Cas? If you havent read it then I recommend it, its seriously awesome:D"

    asker: Anonymous

I haven’t read it but our new mod, flyingcatstiel, did. She’ll likely do a review for it, but here are some recs for you (from her):

When Charlie Met Cas [M…but judging by the warnings, it seems like it may be borderline NC-17, 25,000 word count] (our review)

Charlie is back in all her glory. The Winchesters have showed up on her doorstep and she’s making the best of it the only way she knows how. By being the little sister Dean never wanted and shipping the shit out of Destiel.

Now, the fic shows Charlie and Sam playing matchmaker. So, here are some other humorous, fluffy, matchmaker fics. (Great for valentine’s day!)

In Real Life [R, 7,000 word count] blind date!

AU/Fusion Challenge and the prompt is pretty much the summary: #66: High school teachers. Castiel is the English teacher at the school Sam teaches history at. Dean is a writer who has been sending his stories to an online friend (Castiel) for editing. Sam finds out and realizes that Dean and Castiel don’t know each other in real life, but really should.

It’s Brilliant, Really! [NC-17, 15,936 word count] blind date!

Castiel Novak is a History adjunct at Stanford University. He’s also the most patient younger brother. When his older brother, Gabriel, decides to start *wooing* one of his younger waiters, Castiel reluctantly agrees to double-date with the intended paramour’s older brother. What he didn’t expect, however, was how much his own life would flip over such a careless decision.

How To Romance A Human [T, 4,400 word count]

Castiel consults Cosmopolitan magazine in order to win Dean’s heart.

Operation Jealousy [R/Mature, 1,200 word count]

Sam gives Dean that final push towards Cas.

    Cas + Dean 4ever [NC-17, 10,600 word count]

Dean finds a diary that is like the worst “Do you like me, y/n?” letter in history, Sam helps Castiel with one of the most ill-conceived plans ever, and Ruby is highly amused by everything.

A Clever Suggestion [R/Mature, 2,200 word count] blind date!

Castiel and Victor share a gym, and Castiel is surprised when Victor tries to set him up.

A Mismatch Made in Heaven [G, 2,949 word count]

Dean’s not very keen on explaining he doesn’t want to go on a date with Anna’s brother because he’s smitten—and he hates, hates, hates using the word smitten—with a dark-haired stranger whose name he doesn’t know.

    Submitted by an anon:

I recently read this very cute fic called Faith and Deeds, where Mary sort of plays matchmaker for Dean/Cas.

Faith and Deeds [PG, 6,500 word count]

The Miltons own a haphazard produce store, and Mary Winchester is their most frequent customer.

    Convenient Husbands

Convenient husbands by scaramouche [author spotlight]
    AO3 link
    Rating: NC-17
    Word Count: 39,000
Summary: “It’s only temporary, right?” Dean says. “Just until you’re healed up, and then we’ll never have to see each other again. So what do you say, Castiel, do you want to marry me or not?”

I loved this one. Sort of AU, where Castiel is most definately not an angel. Really love the AU spn science and theology the author created, and Dean and Cas’ relationship. Really lovely, and fluffy, if a teensy bit confusing at times.

There’s a sequel here (beyond the timestamp scaramouche did for the fic). It is very different in tone and not fluff (happy ending though).
