Down by the Water by  [NC-17, 88,400 word count]

    recced by Olivia

When Castiel loses everything dear to him due to a botched river crossing, including his supplies, livestock, covered wagon, and even his wife, he has no where to turn, no way to survive stranded in the middle of his journey. That is, until he meets Dean Winchester, who offers him a life saving deal: In exchange for help on his farm, Dean offers to provide much needed room and board. But how will this decision affect Castiel as he moves through his grief, and discovers feelings he never would have expected? Fighting with injury, pain, grief, and even the threat of death, Dean and Castiel find themselves in the one place they would have never expected: down by the water, struggling to accept their unforeseen love. ((Set in 1853. AU.))

    'Til the Last

    'Til the Last by miss_grey
    Rating: NC-17
    Word Count: 75,100

Summary: When the war came, Dean Winchester was determined that he was not going to get involved. He had more important things to worry about than some rich man’s fight. He had work on the farm and he had taking care of his family. Nothing else was worth his worry. But in August in the Year of Our Lord 1863, when the soldiers came knocking, they weren’t asking. They dragged Dean away. Dean and Cas have been best friends since they were kids. When Dean is drafted into the Confederate army, to what lengths will Castiel go to ensure that Dean makes it back home alive?

The US Civil War is the violent backdrop to this story about duty, love and family. The author tells the story of Dean and Castiel, beginning with their entry into the war in the summer of 1863. The stark realities of the battlefield are interleaved with flashbacks from their childhood and letters from home. The author describes specific battles with an intimacy and accuracy that immerses the reader in each horrifying moment. It takes an excellent storyteller to keep readers engaged when the outcomes of events like Sherman’s (now Gabriel’s) March to the Sea are known. In this case, the story is also told from the perspective of Southern soldiers and the conflicted views held by these comrades-in-arms simmer just under the surface.

The greatest strength of this story is in its contrasts and of the greatest of these is Castiel himself. The flashbacks reveal a gentle and kind boy with a core of steel. Even as an abused child, he couldn’t stand to see the slaves of his parent’s plantation brutalized. He worked to protect them when he could, and ease their pain when he couldn’t. This is contrasted with the sharp-shooter he becomes, carefully placing one bullet after another into oncoming forces to protect the one he loves.

Canon elements are woven throughout. The single-minded ruthlessness of Dean rampaging through the union camp in search of a captured Cas harkens to purgatory and his search for the Angel. Cas rebels against his family and their plans for his future to enlist in the infantry so he can watch over Dean. War changes everyone it touches, yet the hope and faith in Dean and Cas’ story stands against the horrors that surround them and provides a path through the storm.

Nine Times We Met (And One Christmas We Parted)

Nine Times We Met (And One Christmas We Parted) by almaasi [author spotlight]
    Rating: NC-17
    Word Count: 58,000
Summary: On the last day of school before Christmas vacation, Mr. Castiel Quinn discovers that one of his young students has smuggled male pornography into the classroom. Upon being told that the photos belong to the boy’s uncle, Castiel vows to himself that he will keep the other man’s preferences a secret. It’s 1947; a man experiencing attraction to another man or fantasising about his sexual touch are transgressive faults, which could potentially result in imprisonment - or worse. But then the uncle walks in. The photos are of him: Dean Winchester, a rogue with an empty pocket and a child to feed. Castiel doesn’t know it yet, but his life is never going to be the same again. Years pass between chance meetings, but even though they live their lives apart, Dean and Castiel’s story is proof that absence truly does make the heart grow fonder.

Castiel and Dean only meet once every few years, and these chance encounters over decades change their lives. The fear of discovery in a homophobic world is palpable and it shapes their choices. These are not perfect people and they make mistakes as they try to balance their fears with their desires. Yet there is an honesty in their awkwardness that is very human.

The author’s summary, tags and warnings at the beginning of this fic tell you most of what you need to know to decide if this story is right for you. Many may be scared off by the major character death warning but remember, a good life and a good death often go hand in hand. I won’t deny that I needed to put my pillowcase in the dryer when I was done reading, yet my heart was light.

In January of 1862, Castiel died alongside Samuel Colt, trying to close the Devil’s Gate in Sunrise, Wyoming. Only, he wasn’t supposed to die. An Angel, Dean, rescued him from Hell and brought him back to Earth to finish his mission. The Devil’s Gate must be closed in order to prevent a grave disaster 150 years in the future. The demon, Alastair, however, will do anything to stop this from happening. Will the good guy be able to stop the bad guy with the help of the angel? Time will tell.

    As The Sparrow

    As The Sparrow by hubrisandwax
    Rating: NC-17
    Word Count: 19,000
Summary: It’s 1947. Dean is an ex-marine fighting crime and a very different sort of war to the one he faced in the Pacific as a detective on the streets of LA. This city isn’t all the glitz and glamor it’s made out to be, however, and Dean finds himself tugged in to a world of life-threatening unknowns when Daphne Novak’s body is discovered. Castiel Novak, her husband, was one of Dean’s battalion mates in the war, and he’s just as deadly and dangerous as he was two years ago when he saved Dean’s life during the Battle of Okinawa. Except now he’s wanted for his wife’s murder, and Dean just doesn’t believe Cas is capable of that.
Is Cas really who he says he is, though? And what will Dean have to sacrifice in order to repay the debt he feels he owes?

Here’s a lovely historical au fic with a very distinct film noir feeling. I particularly liked how all the layers of the story interacted with each other and came together in the end - the murder mystery, the war memories, and their civilian life with their pretty wives. But above all, every bit of the story is thoroughly soaked with unabashed UST between Dean and Cas. There’s not a moment when Dean doesn’t think about Cas. There’s not a moment when Cas doesn’t want to protect Dean. Ah, I really wish this story would have gone on a little bit longer.

    For Love, For Glory

For Love, For Glory by bellanovaskies
    AO3 link
    Rating: M
    Word Count: 84,000
Summary: It’s the 1940’s, the war is tearing Europe in half, and the Nazis have a plan to uncover an ancient weapon belonging to the Egyptian gods that can tip the scale in their favor. With the help of a librarian named Castiel, it’s up to Sam and Dean Winchester, respectively a professor of archaeology and treasure hunter, to get to the Lost City of Amun-Ra and stop the Third Reich from achieving world domination. But with a missing father, secret societies, and an unexpected romance, things get more than a little complicated in this race against time. Loosely based on the Indiana Jones franchise.

Well, here it is – an Indiana Jones inspired destiel fic starring one Dean Winchester as a ruggedly handsome treasure hunter, Sam Winchester as an esteemed archaeology professor, and a certain Castiel Milton as a quiet librarian who is more important to their quest than he ever suspected. The fic has a lovely historical flair and colorful descriptions of different cities but, most importantly, the author pays due attention to the societal taboo that surrounded gay relationships at the time. Just like the movies, the fic is brimming with adventures and action sequences. Our favorite trio travels across Europe looking for clues to an old mystery while trying to evade Nazis at every turn. In the end, all adversaries meet in Egypt where some serious business is going to happen. Let’s just say that Dean has a chance to speak to some gods, again, while the Men of Letters and Thule society are scheming in the background. I’m pretty sure that The Riders of the Lost Arc and The Last Crusade movies have also inspired a few scenes. Overall, the story has a nostalgic, old fashioned movie feel while the ending, sigh, the ending reminded me of Casablanca.

    The Angle of Repose

The Angle of Repose by standbyme
    Rating: M
    Word Count: 45,000
Summary: by the year 1972 the state of kentucky had produced over 100 million tons of bituminous coal. when castiel, the new continuous miner operator at the venus coal camp’s no. 6 mine, begins to sense something strange is happening underground, the lines between the possible and the impossible begin to blur, and dean may be the only one who is willing to believe him.

DeanCas Big Bang season is finally upon us! (More info here.) This work caught my attention during art claims (when summaries are posted) and my love of Loretta Lynn as a child is probably definitely to blame. Highly atmospheric and with great regional flair, I was pretty impressed by this story. The mine and town are basically characters and both felt very authentic (you’ll likely need to google some mining terms). The town was simultaneously small and expansive, and the regional tone was enjoyable. There was even a brief clogging scene! Though this is a historical AU, there isn’t any gay panic or homophobia (even if there are a few scenes that imply they are hiding their relationship). While inaccurate, I was totally fine with it being glossed over.

I loved how well the author fit the characters into this AU. The occupation of coal mining aligns surprisingly well with hunting (high risk, low monetary reward, blue collar). I found myself very drawn to Sam’s storyline and his character journey (influence by pre-series!Sam). Then there’s Dean bearing the brunt of familial responsibility but loving his work, and Cas as the outsider working alongside Dean and offering support Dean’s never had.

The story focuses more on the overall human drama, with the romance taking a backseat (with not just Dean and Cas, but Sam and Jess as well). This is also a supernatural horror piece. All the mine scenes were fantastically confining and at times creepy and chilling. Though I personally would have liked to see more horror, what’s there is well done.

"I made sure I went through the tag before I decided to send this message. I noticed that the kid!fic tag are fics about Cas and Dean having kids. I was wondering if y'all had a list of fics of Cas and Dean being kids?"

    asker: Anonymous

We’ve been asked this a few times before, so figured we’d start a new tag (“as kids”) and lay out some fics for those interested.

First of all, relevant tags: underage!cas, underage!dean, deaged (particularly this ask about them both deaging), high school, weechesters. We also have a “youth” section on the tags page you might be interested in. In this list below, we’ll differentiate between young teenagers (12-16) and kids (< 12).

    I. From this ask (best friends tag, growing up together without flashbacks, as kids):

II. Other fics where they’re kids (in the beginning or throughout fic):

III. Fics where they’re young teenagers (in the beginning or throughout fic):

    IV. Flashbacks to being children:

    V. Flashbacks to being young teenagers:

VI. Mostly from our weechesters tag, Cas as an angel watching over/interacting with kid!dean:

    New unofficial recs:

    Category I:

A Long Time Coming [T, 1,500 word count]

Dean and Cas have been friends for as long as they can remember. It might be the slowest love story in history.

For Every Second Chance [PG-13, 5,000 word count]

Prompt - High school/college AU. Castiel and Dean - friends since they were very, very small. But suddenly there’s this weird distance and Cas can’t understand why. (I think we all know why.) Bonus points if Gabriel is in there somewhere, maybe as Cas’ brother or friend, making disparaging remarks about Dean. (I’d prefer no Sam/Gabriel, but whatever the author wants to do) And, double double bonus points, to repair their friendship/relationship after doing something especially dumb, Dean makes some sort of public declaration of his ~feelings.

    Milton Manor [NC-17, 60,000 word count] historical!au

When stable boy Dean Winchester and Lord Milton’s son Castiel first meet they become friends instantly. But seven years away at boarding school change the young master and their bond seems to have faded into obscurity. Can Dean find his way back into Castiel’s heart or is there nothing left to return to?

    Category II:

Childhood Valentine [G, 5,000 word count]

St Valentine’s Day in the Sioux Fall Kindergarten. Ms. Ellen Harvelle teaches her students what so special about today. Lots of chocolates ensue.

Paper Heart [G, 2,500 word count]

Written for the prompt: Kindergarten AU in which Dean is determined to make his friend Castiel a valentine, and John very gently tries to persuade him not to because little boys don’t give other little boys Valentine’s Day cards. Your choice on how Dean deals with the news, and what happens afterward.

    Category IV:

The Crown and the Lance [NC-17, 37,000 word count]

War has passed and peace is upon the Kingdom of Salvation. Jousts are now common affairs, which Sir Dean of Winchester competes in to earn prizes for his ailing county. Yet when Dean is bested by an unknown competitor and saves Prince Castiel from a failed assassination attempt his life is torn apart as he is forced to confront old nightmares and memories. A medieval AU rife with assassins, treachery and emotionally crippled princes and knights.
