The World Crashing Around Us by thepinupchemist [author spotlight]
Word Count: 36,000
Summary: During a storm in September of 1987, Dean and Sam hear something hit their roof. When they brave the backyard to investigate, they find a fledgling angel. A story about best friendship, spoiled plans, and love, in four parts.
When rebellious, 8 year old Castiel escapes his guardian and flies into a thunderstorm, he begins a friendship with Dean that spans decades. Cas is immediately drawn to Dean and innocently declares his intent to claim Dean by bringing him a gift. Ignorant of angel traditions, Dean accepts Cas’ offering and gives him a gift in return. This initial exchange starts them down a path of deep friendship muddied by miscommunication. Things escalate as Dean matures and starts dating (and no, he is not dating Cas).
We follow the characters through critical points in their lives beginning when our characters are 8 and continuing when they are 13, 17 and 29. The author has an amazing ability to match the language and style of the fic to the different ages of our boys. I truly felt like I was listening in on the thoughts and conversations of an 8 yr old! Although this fic definitely has a high fluff factor, there is also an underlying message about the importance of valuing yourself independent of your relationships with others. On a somewhat shallow note – angels…wings…Mmmmmm, if you get my drift!
Note: There is fan art in the body of the work that you will miss if you download the ePub.
A Million Ways to Go by ChasingRabbits
Word Count: 91,000
Summary: Castiel is a preacher’s son living in a world of black and white. Pragmatic and dutiful, he doesn’t understand why anybody would want to make waves. And then the Winchesters move in down the street.
This fic had me from the very first page:
Michael left for basic training two weeks before they ended up having to bury Lucifer.
Lucifer was sixteen and angry. And now that’s all he’ll ever be.
The Novak family is broken. The tragedy of their son’s death has the adult’s deep in denial, leaving their other children alone to deal with the consequences. Each copes in different and increasingly self-destructive ways. Sam and Dean have their own family issues as Sam starts a new school again and Dean works odd jobs while John is on the road hunting down supernatural threats.
When Dean and Cas meet, the story that unfolds is funny, melancholy, and of course, romantic. Dean and Cas’ relationship begins slowly and builds into something both of them need in the face of hardship. The life of teenagers with absentee parents is revealed as Dean, Cas, Gabriel and Sam deal with drugs, depression, and ultimately the haunting of the Novak household.
I loved Cas’ dry humor, Dean’s bravado and Sam’s desperate attempts at normalcy. The writing in this fic was just phenomenal with humor and angst circling each other in a way that was simultaneously heartwarming and heart-wrenching. Overall, this was a stark look at the damage inflicted by silence. The importance of familial bonds, be they formed by blood or not, is beautifully illustrated.

Author Castiel Novak has finally hit the big time, with a book based on his failed college relationship with a brilliant painter. He’s put all his pain behind him, but at a book signing, he comes face to face with Dean Winchester for the first time in twelve years, and the reunion doesn’t go like Cas hoped. Dean’s a broken man, with a lot of scars and secrets, shoulders weighed down by his demons and self loathing.
Cas sees a second chance with the man he’s never stopped loving, but Dean’s moved on, and is about to get married. Sam launches a “brilliant” plan to reunite his brother and his best friend, but Cas is worried it will all blow up in their faces, and he’ll go through the agony of losing Dean a second time.

Castiel is a rare Omega. Not only does he resent his place in society but he has spent a lifetime suppressing his true instincts.
He takes a night job as an emergency services dispatcher so that he can hide away from a world that he has no place in.
Over the years he has developed an obsessive and very real phobia for everything that threatens his solitude. He has recurring nightmares that terrify him. Nightmares that fill his mind with images of being taken and claimed against his will.
He only wants to be left alone and unmated but fate seems to have other plans for him when he unexpectedly meets someone that seems to want to help.
He starts to suspect that his protector is actually an Alpha male who wants to claim him for life.
Castiel is scared that he might not be able to stop himself from falling in love.

Sam and Dean Winchester are professional lawbreakers and criminals. That being said, they’re awfully good at minding their own business and staying out of trouble. That is, until they’re landed with an escaped slave and what might just be the story of their lives. On the run and with enemies on every side, all Dean can think about is finding a way to keep his brother safe and get the cops off his tail. But things are never that easy, and this particular complication is one of the heart, and comes ready-packaged with a pair of very blue eyes…

After surviving a car accident, Dean Winchester needs a way to keep healthy. His brother, for some reason, seems to think pole dancing would be perfect for him. After meeting Castiel, his pole dancing teacher, maybe things won’t be so bad for Dean after all…

The Winchesters find out that angels do not reproduce the same way as humans. Castiel explains that his vessel is not pregnant, his grace is simply splitting to make a new angel. But, even the best laid plans sometimes go awry, especially when Heaven is involved. When the Apocalypse is nigh and Castiel is running out of grace, Dean takes it upon himself to take care of Castiel and the new angel and ends up learning how much the angel means to him. Sam on the other hand, must make amends with his own angel.
Ask #1 (saved-by-sanfrancisco): bigbro!gabriel
After watching the latest episode, I was wondering if you have a fics where Gabriel is Castiel’s guardian/caretaker when he’s a young angel…?Thank you!

Cas, You Had A Baby? [M, 107,000 word count (WIP)]At some point in every angel’s life, raising a fledgling is required. Castiel’s turn comes rather unexpectedly when his superiors hand off a newly created infant angel to him and leave him to raise it with all of Heaven’s principles of blind obedience. He’s not sure what to do, so he tucks the fledgling in his coat and goes straight to Dean and Sam Winchester. Together, Dean and Castiel hatch a plan to raise the fledgling away from Heaven’s control. And soon, the angel Hael arrives with news that, after Castiel disappeared, she and four other angels ran from Heaven’s oppression with their fledglings. Castiel finds himself the unwitting ringleader of angels choosing to raise their fledglings with the principles of free will. Is angelic parenthood too much for his deepening relationship with Dean? Who can they really trust?
Ask #2 (deancassamsupernatural): pop music + annoyed!dean
Do you have any fics where Cas and Dean are in the Bunker and Dean is getting annoyed because Cas is listening to pop music?
Ask #3 (allovely): there’s this fic… #1
Hi, I think you are amazing people helping out so many of us to find amazing fics out there :D. I’ve been looking for a specific fic where Dean asks Sam for lunch money and Cas sees it and mistakes Dean for a bully, I haven’t found it anywhere and i’ve searched under the bullying and love/hate tag, I dont remember much else, but perhaps a follower has heard of this fic?.
The Trenchcoat Avenger of Truman High [NC-17, 39,000 word count (WIP)]
Dean thought Truman High would be like every other high school he’s been to in the last year. He has his sights set on getting to third base with the hottest girl in school and doing as little actual school work as possible. Dad will be finished with his job in two weeks, tops, and then they’ll be moving on. He wasn’t expecting to be clothes-lined by a short, awkward dude in a trench coat, but that isn’t going to stop him from thinking it’s hot.
Castiel Novak does not tolerate bullies, so when he sees a fellow senior teasing his new friend Sam, he reacts without thinking. He never thought the guy would be Sam’s older brother, nor that his own actions might be the catalyst for the most important relationship of his life.
Ask #4 (bird—butt): there’s this fic… #2
Okay I searched the tag but I couldn’t find what I wanted. So in this fanfic Sam and Dean aren’t related but are in a relationship thats quite abusive, so after Sam beats Dean enough to send him to the hospital. Dean meets Castiel who is a doctor there,I also remember that because of the beating Dean became blind and he eventually moves in with Castiel. And Cas helps him cope with being blind.
Spatial Recognition [M, 13,900 word count (WIP)]Dean is trapped in a violent relationship. His boyfriend of three years is an alcoholic in denial with a penchant for abuse. When his third hospital visit in two months has a devastating diagnosis, Dean realizes he needs to get out.
If any of our followers have anything to rec, drop it in our ask box (mention which ask you are talking about by number or bolded title). Thanks!!

When John insisted that Dean was to attend college, Dean drove halfway across the country with his best friend Cas in tow. But when Sam finds that he can’t handle the way John is without his eldest around, he finds solace in Cas’ brother, who doesn’t ask questions but always offers an escape route.
