Oh, this has gotta be the office rom com fic to end all office rom com fics! Cas is aloof, snarky, and adorable-in-a-very-grumpy-way researcher while Dean is just a sweet and adorable technical sub-contractor. Together, they built a space rocket thing-y! Ava Wilson, my favorite secretary from Peoria, is doing her best to remind Cas about normal human interactions while many beloved characters from earlier seasons populate the office and provide all the necessary hustle and bustle for a successful rom com. Then there’s Crowley, their unwilling liaison at Boeing and, apparently, Castiel’s old flame. If you’re not a big crowstiel fan then maybe you should skip this fic. Their relationship is very much in the past but it gets mentioned quite a lot. Another bit of tension is brought in by the antics of dysfunctional “angel” family: Lucifer, Michael, Gabriel, Anna, Balthazar, and cousin Zachariah are hell-bent on making Cas’ life miserable and uniformly contribute to his desperate desire to never see the family again.
Just a brief note – there’s some technical lingo what with Cas being almost a genius and Dean being really smart and all of them working for NASA. Also, it took me a chapter or two to get into that special brand of Cas’ deadpan, self-depreciating commentary style of the fic but after that it was a very enjoyable read.

Summary: One day Cas says, “Stars died for you, Dean Winchester”, against ruffled hair perched atop sun kissed skin and sleepy eyes.
Dean stirs, moving to spread his palms against the contour of Cas’ back, tips of fingers languidly strumming the indentations of his spine. One, two, three, four, he counts, the closest he could get to scientifically studying the anatomy of the human body.
"Is this some physics crap again?" He frowns with eyes closed.
Cas smiles softly. “Far from it.”
Dean’s fingers play at the base of his back, ninth thoracic vertebrae, Cas notes.
"Then tell me all about it."
"There is a star and a child. There is also an angel and his hunter. And it is all an infinite number of very complicated stories." Although this fic is not as long as others, it feels infinite. The concept and the philosophy that underpin this magnificent story give it a powerful edge. It allows a very raw portrayal of what it means for a creature as unfathomable as Castiel to focus on something as fleeting as Dean, and opens your eyes to the youth of humanity in the eyes of stars.
The base of this story, where the angels are not angels but stars, lies in the distance between us and the stars. The incredible depth of the bond between Castiel and Dean that defies everything, but not only that, also Castiel’s capacity for love of humanity. His faith, in humanity. It is truly humbling.
This a story of love, faith and above all sacrifice… “I always choose you, Dean.”

Come In From The Cold by deathbycoldopen
Word Count: 32,400
Summary: When Castiel Angelios moves to town to eventually fill his brother’s old position in the family business, he never expected to be enlisted in an increasingly antagonistic prank war between his family and another. Nor did he expect to meet someone like Dean Winchester, the charming and beautiful owner of the cafe across the street. But while Castiel attempts to navigate the line between loyalty to his family, and strengthening this fledgeling friendship, he discovers that both sides are using illegal magics to get ahead, jeopardizing everything that Castiel has built for himself.
There are not enough magic coffee shop AUs in this fandom if you ask me. This adorable story fills the void and, who knows, maybe it will start a trend. I was really intrigued by all the little snippets about the slightly dystopian world where magic is illegal and people can be punished for using it and would love to learn more. But, in the end, this fic is about Dean and Cas and their tentative dance around each other. The story itself is not so much about pranks as it is about family and how far people will go to do what they think they owe their family. There are nice callbacks to canon elements and Cas is visibly conflicted between loyalty to his brothers and his new found friends at Café Impala.
And can I just flail a little bit about how fitting the title is? The story explores similar themes as a couple of songs with identical titles and pays homage to a famous spy novel. By mixing them together, the author has created a heartwarming story about opening up, trusting, and forgiving.

Dean Winchester is a kindergarten teacher. Castiel Milton is a writer slash works-in-a-coffee-shop. He also happens to be the extremely hot one-night stand that Dean never intended to see again other than in his own fantasies (he’s classy like that). But suddenly Cas is everywhere and Dean is convinced that Fate is out to get him. And maybe they do this thing backwards, but that doesn’t have to mean they can’t make it in the end, right?

By the Dark of the Moon by r2metoo
Word Count: 92,400
Summary: John Winchester has this saying: Alphas are the head of the pack, but Omegas are the brains. And that’s what Dean wants.
'By the Dark of the Moon' was a fic that really pulled me in. I have a particular liking of AU's with alpha/beta/omega dynamics and this one proved to be fulfilling in the focus on plot rather then on smut. (If you read alpha/omega more for the smut then maybe this fic isn't for you.) I admit I was slightly dubious at the start as it seemed a bit basic, but the characterisation and the plot started to build as the story progressed. By the 3rd chapter I was completely pulled into the story.
There is a lot of love in this fic and all the angst is balanced out with laughter. The story focuses on the perspectives of minor characters too, with some Sabriel and Lucathazar. It gave the fic a very rounded feel and gave the society of co-existent human and supernatural beings a refreshing depth, the focus is however essentially completely on were creatures. It’s a great read with angst sufficient to give the story a solid plot and balanced out with great dialogue, steamy smut, and domestic fluff.

Dream As If You’ll Live Forever & Live As If You’ll Die Today by commodoresexual
Rating: NC-17 (light)
Word Count: 29,400
Summary: Cas hasn’t spoken a word to anyone in years and is a drifter who works various odd jobs to finance himself. Dean is a guy with a violent temper who grew up in foster care and has just gotten out of prison for a stupid judgment call. The two cross paths in a pay-by-the-week boarding house run by an eccentric older couple (Bobby and Ellen).
Ok, so….this story has been on my “to read” list since I entered the fandom (popping up on all kinds of rec lists). I kept putting it off for two silly and misinformed reasons. First of all, I thought it was a historical AU (I got a turn of the century vibe from the summary). Secondly, I only ever saw the first story linked (6k word count; have I mentioned my bias against short fics? lol).
Well, I finally got around to reading the fic and oh lord, was it wonderful. I totally loved Cas’ characterization (and Dean’s…but I always get excited about AUs where Cas doesn’t lose his “otherness”). I also thought this was going to be angsty but it’s very heartwarming. I’ve tagged as fluff but it isn’t super fluffy. It has it’s moments, but it’s more soothing. It’s like the Friday afternoon after a particularly stressful and intense week. All the bad shit is over and, though there’s anxiety you can’t immediately magic away, it’s decreasing and you feel lighter and lighter as night approaches.
It’s hard to say what I liked most about this fic. There’s so many little things, quiet moments, and short exchanges that I just want to wrap up in and say, “Yes. This is lovely.” There’s Dean and Cas’ relationship, inexplicably drawn together at first. They see pieces of themselves in the other and can relax because they know the other understands (even if they don’t know specifics). There’s Dean and Sam’s relationship as one focus. There’s Bobby, Ellen, and Jo just being great: rough around the edges, but family. There’s domestic-ness, some hurt/comfort, the occasional outside POV, and even a small amount kid!fic. But ultimately, I think I love this story because it’s about finding home.

Dean didn’t need to graduate college, but he did need to graduate high school. Even still, he needed some way to get through this year in one piece, preferably with his sanity intact. Who knows? Maybe the weird kid with the blue eyes can help.
This is a very plotty season 5 fic with yet another alternate take on the apocalypse. The story has spoilers up to 5x10. After that, the author has great imagination and unlimited resources to show us how slowly but surely the world is going down the drain, even before the battle between Michael and Lucifer takes place. Team Free Will gets some help from archangels, angels, and hunters; while Lucifer amasses his demons and Meg has a fucking dragon! I chuckled a bit when the boys decided that the best place for the final showdown was Las Vegas; because, yeah, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. Literally in this case. The final battle is a sight to remember and something like that would be impossible to achieve on a TV show. I mean, the Belaggio and Luxor hotels alone are way above their paygrade, lol.
The PG-13 rating kind of warns you that there isn’t much going on with relationships. However, I was a little bit irked that Sam and Gabriel got more action than Dean and Cas. But that says more about my preferences than the overall quality of the fic.
