The Dance of Inanna by peppermintwind [author spotlight]
Word count: 105,657
Summary: “Hey Sammy? You didn’t happen to start an apocalypse while I was in Purgatory, did you?” Or: After the disappearance of the One, pagan gods are fighting over who gets the world. Alliances are forged and broken, Zeus and Enlil form a bromance, Odin teams up with Isis, Loki probably has an evil plan, Artemis ponders second-wave feminism, Crowley is amused, the angels are not, Inanna has opinions, Don is a Carver Edland fan. And Dean and Cas aren’t fooling anybody.
The first thing I want to say about this fic – IT. IS. HILARIOUS. But it is also angsty and heartbreaking, and with bittersweet ending that fits the show. This is one of those rare fics that skillfully uses godless amounts of canon references (another one is Shine) and then tops them with tumblr theories regarding season 8. Seriously, this fic completely blurs the lines between fan fiction and canon. I have never read a fic that follows canon in real time and uses new elements from the show in upcoming chapters. So, beware of spoilers if you aren’t up to date with the show. The story starts after the events of 8x08, and loosely references canon elements from 1x01 to 8x17.
One of the best aspects of the fic is the ensemble cast of supporting characters. Benny joins TFW; Sam-Amelia-Don angst around each other; Kevin and Linda Tran get used to hunters’ lifestyle with Garth. And I had my personal bonus – badass Claire Novak. Not to mention constant bitching from Sam, scowling from Dean, and profound bonding from Cas. I must admit that those hard to pronounce Sumerian gods were a little bit confusing but educational nevertheless. Overall, I enjoyed this fic very much and I advise you to read it right now while season 8 is fresh in your mind.
