Summary: Dean is fine with sailing through high school as nobody exceptional or worth noting - he can even deal with Castiel, typical hotshot football player, always staring at him over lunch. What he doesn’t expect is for Castiel to pick up the pieces of him and worm his way into his life, carving a place there for himself - and he certainly never imagined that he’d be finding out that there’s more to Cas than money and popularity.
I think we’ve unofficially recced this five times by now; so here’s an official review.
I had a bit of trouble getting into this fic at first (some rough writing and character development that was a bit forced), but I’m glad I stuck with it. The writing gets better and the story gets bonus points for having Cas as the popular guy for a change and no gay panic (though there’s some Cas-centered coming out angst). If you are looking for a slow build from no relationship to BFFs to romantically involved, this is for you. The levels of angst and fluff alternate well so the fic never gets too angsty or sweet. And even if the character development felt forced at times, I still enjoyed it. I loved seeing Cas slowly open up to Dean about his painful family history. I liked seeing canon plot lines transposed to this AU. Overall, a pretty enjoyable high school AU. (Oh, and there’s a nice christmas pwp timestamp.)
PS: These tags are getting ridiculous, lol.
